Activities

Within my working environment I am concerned with the conception, development and use of (software) solutions in the area of information management for Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics - Austria's federal weather service.

Until today I have been working with different aspects of information management in various projects:

I was involved conceptionally in projects on media history, electronic democracy and cultual heritage informatics. My activities covered information retrieval, organisation of information in various forms (classification, ontology, matrix), data modelling, as well as the design of hypertext user interfaces.

Information visualization or applications for multimedia terminals formed kind of a framework. The results took several forms, ranging from digital artwork over research documentation, virtual exhibition to diverse online portals and product catalogues. The software colutions implemented were based on a set of technologies: XHTML/PHP/JavaScript/XML/RSS/RDF/MySQL

Professional Qualification

• Information Managment Software Engineering
  as employee at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), Vienna.
  
  Redesign of ZAMG Website
  My activities have covered: software development of a content management system, conception of the information architecture and implementation of a low-barrier graphic layout, organization of the automatic data transfer/update.

  Important new aspects and improvements for the Website's users:

  • Principles of Web accessibility were given regard to (HTML framesets were abandoned, also only marginal usage of tables for layout purposes.)
  • bi-lingual meta data and full text search - embedded via the htdig software package.
  • complete re-organisation of the information resources into eight main areas; four topic-related covering the areas of public sector information of ZAMG. The additional Website areas offer a product catalogue, a research documentation, remarks on newly-added (non) realtime information/weather data. A current and historic organizational portrait of ZAMG and its reseach units is also given.
    
    
• Conduction of a feasability study on behalf of the Austrian Computer Society
  (...) Weiters arbeitet die OCG seit Jahresende 2004 im Auftrag des BMBWK an einer Machbarkeitsstudie zum Thema "standardisierter, systemunabhängiger Training-on-the-Job-Kurs für kleinere und mittlere österreichische Kulturerbeinstitutionen". In Anlehnung an den Europäischen Computer Führerschein (ECDL) soll das Konzept einer CH@DL ("Cultural Heritage Digitisation License") entwickelt werden. Die Kursteilnehmer/innen sollen nach Absolvierung Hintergrundwissen und praktische Kenntnisse für die Planung, Steuerung und Durchführung von Dokumentations- und Digitalisierungsaktivitäten besitzen und ihr Wissen unabhängig von einer spezifischen Hard- und Software-Installation anwenden können. Ein wesentlicher Teil dieser Arbeit wird von Mag. (FH) Leonhard Huber durchgeführt.

• Collaboration in the EU IST project Virtual Showcases - Presenting hybrid exhibits.
  
• Interactive preparation of media history topics for the medien.matrix as well as parallel compilation of a comprehensive media historic database:
  
  • 520 texts (in German and English),
  • 1800 images,
  • approx. 70 animations/videos,
  • approx. 75 music clips,
  • and 200+ bibliographic references and Web links
  about the history of media and their socio-cultural anchorage, usage and effects. (status July 4, 2003)
